YONER LIBERIA MENTORS 132 YOUNG GIRLS IN THREE COUNTIES OF LIBERIA FOR 2022 SHE-CAN FULLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

On July 22, 23, 29 and 30, 2021, YONER Liberia organized four information and mentoring sessions which directly reached and impacted 132 young girls in Bassa, Margibi and Montserrado Counties. The Grand Bassa County’s session was held on Thursday, July 22, 2021 in Buchannan at the American Corner on the Bassa High School Campus. This session brought together 12 young girls (current 12th graders) from various high schools in Buchannan. On Friday, July 23, 2021, the organization hosted the Margibi County’s Session in Kakata at the American Corner on the BWI Campus, which brought together 94 young girls (current 12th graders and high school graduates) from various high schools across Kakata. And on July 29 and 30, it hosted Montserrado County’s sessions at YONER Liberia Office in Paynesville which brought together 26 young girls (current 12th graders and high school graduates) from across Paynesville and Monrovia.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SESSIONS: These sessions were organized to provide detailed information on the SHE-CAN Scholarship program, to offer tips and guidance on the application and how to fill out the application form in order to submit winning applications.

TARGET OF SHE-CAN PROGRAM: SHE-CAN’s fully funded scholarships targets only young women ages 17-20 years old, but must be current 12graders and high school graduates.

 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: In addition to being between ages 17-20 years and a current 12th graders and high school graduates, potential applicants must be passionate about changing Liberia, from a low-income household, interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree at a U.S. college or university, already leaders in their school or community and academically strong: consistently ranked high in their schools and classes (1st-5th), with strong grades and a passing score on the WAEC/WASSCE.

Supporting Her Education Changes A Nation (SHE-CAN) is an American Non-Profit with a mission to build female leadership in post-conflict countries by equipping and empowering young women with the education, mentorship and leadership skills needed to change their nations and the world. Since 2011, SHE-CAN has helped 74 scholars from Rwanda, Liberia and Cambodia win over $19M in full-ride scholarships.

SHE-CAN extended its program to Liberia in 2018 and since 14 young Liberians have been selected. Out of this number, 9 persons already in the United States of America and had begun their study while the rest are being prepared to depart Liberia mid next year.

SHE-CAN plans to select about 10 young ladies from Liberia this year and every year going forward. It’s our hope that Liberian young girls will see this as an opportunity to unleash their full potential and take them and their families from extreme poverty to prosperity, growth and development in their lives, families and help to rebuild and transform Liberia.
